It's been awhile since I visited a good restaurant but with the summer coming to a close I decided to venture out again and check out a fine Berlin eatery.
First impressions
The restaurant itself is located deep within the West of Berlin on Kant Str., which contains a cluster of restaurants mostly serving Asian cuisine. In fact, you might say Funky Fisch is part of a cluster within the cluster. I believe the proprietor is The Duc Ngo who also owns Ngo Kim Pak down the road from Funky Fish and 893 Ryōtei just around the corner (actually the latter is a very fine restaurant indeed, which unfortunately I visited before blogging on restaurants, but perhaps I will revisit it at some point).
Anyway, to the main subject of the review, on entrance Funky Fisch appears a compact and lively space. It's divided into a large 'main' dining room and second smaller dinning room. You enter the main room from the street with the space largely taken up by the bar and a fish counter.
In this room diners sit on stools at large raised tables, which felt a bit of a squeeze to me. The second dining room could make for a more comfortable experience.
The main event
The menu itself is extensive, perhaps a bit even overwhelming. Therethere is also the option to order fresh fish from the fish bar. I felt a little discouraged by the waiter to go for the fish bar, and, since I was dining with a friend, we decided to go for a series of small plates to share. There are also larger typical plates should prefer a more typical three course experience.
The food was tasty, I particularly enjoyed the risotto tuna, and some tempura cod was also a standout (yes we did order fries to go with that..). Overall the food was well prepared and I felt the prices were quite reasonable given the quality and also the ambiance of the restaurant.
As for the drinks, again very solid options. I had a glass of white and later red wine. I particularly enjoyed the red which was a recommendation from the waiter. I also had a negroni, which was professional made and tasty.
Closing thoughts
I'd say Funky Fish is a good option for smaller groups of friends (2-4 people) due to the layout issues I mentioned. It is reasonably priced for the quality of the experience. Staff are knowledgeable and experienced. So it's worth checking out.
